Dhanwanthari Moorthy

Dhanvanthari Moorthy is considered to be the father of medicine and health.

There are various legendary accounts of the "origin of Ayurveda", e.g., that the science was received by Dhanvantari (or Divodasa) from Brahma. Tradition also holds that a lost text written by the sage Agnivesh, a student of the sage Bharadwaja, influenced the writings of Ayurveda.

He is considered to be an Avatar(re- incarnation ) of Lord Vishnu and there are numerous references about him in the ancient Hindu scriptures like the Vedas and the Puranas. He is referred to as the physician of the Gods and the founder of what is known as Ayurvedic medicine and is the God of health and immortality. He is also said to be the first physician and surgeon and it is believed that he is the preserver of the world from all diseases.

The Dhanvanthari mantra is recited to remove fears and diseases and improve health of a person.

" Om Namo Bhagavate
Maha Sudharshana
Vasudevaya Dhanvantaraye;
Amrutha Kalasa Hasthaaya
Sarva Bhaya Vinasaya
Sarva Roka Nivaranaya
Thri Lokya Pathaye
Thri Lokya Nithaye
Sri Maha Vishnu Swarupa
Sri Dhanvantri Swarupa
Sri Sri Sri
Aoushata Chakra Narayana Swaha"

Meaning in English -

" We pray to the God, who is known as Sudarshana Vasudev Dhanvanthari. He holds the Kalasha full of nectar of immortality. Lord Dhanvanthari removes all fears and removes all diseases. He is the well wisher and the preserver of the three worlds. Dhanvanthari is like Lord Vishnu, empowered to heal the Jiva souls. We bow to the Lord of Ayurveda"

Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic medicine is a system of Hindu traditional medicine of Vedic tradition, is native to the Indian subcontinent, and is a form of alternative medicine.

Origins of Ayurveda have been traced back to 5,000 BCE, originating as an oral tradition and later as medical texts, Ayurveda evolved from the Vedas.

Ayurveda is a discipline of the upaveda or auxiliary knowledge in Vedic tradition. It is treated as a supplement or appendix of the Rigveda. However, some believed that Atharva-Veda is the prime origin
of Ayurveda.

There are three major principles in Ayurveda, these are the Charaka Samhitha -Treatise on Medicine, Susrutha Samhitha - Treatise on Surgery and Ashtanga Samgraha - Treatise on the basic principles.

The samhita of the Atharvaveda itself contains 114 hymns or incantations for the magical cure of diseases. Charak has advised in his samhita that physicians should adhere to Atharva-Veda.
